KL654 Crash Site

A few days after the end of World War 2, the British Liberator class bomber KL654 departed the British naval base in the Cocos Islands. A few hours later due to engine failure, it went down into the dense Malayan rainforest killing every one on board.

There it lay undisturbed for several years until discovery by some indigenous hunter gatherers but it was only decades later that an official expedition was made to uncover it and only in 2012 that the remains of the servicemen who were killed were laid to rest.

Today access to the crash site is made much simpler by development in the surrounding area making it far easier to reach by road, and with a convenient trail maintained by the regular stomping of keen hikers who come weekly to visit.

TREKKING PATH

  1. The trek to KL654 can take anywhere between 6 hours to 12 hours return depending on fitness level
  2. The same trail goes past Lata Berembun, Gua Kambing, Gunung Berembun and onwards to the crash site which is well marked with signage and plaques commemorating the loss British servicemen
  3. The complete trail is very varied with river crossings, a steep rope assisted ascent and a ridge walk.
