tucked away from the busy city,
we come to relax and enjoy peace and serenity
tucked away from the busy city,
Live close to nature in the way that was intended.
A collection of small homes in the hills of Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, only a short distance from the bustling capital of Kuala Lumpur, but a world away from the trappings of modern living.
Awake each morning to the chirping of birds, the rustling of leaves, the rays of light through the trees. Fall asleep each night to the creeking of cikadas and crickets, the cool jungle air, the stars and clouds over moonlit skies.
The retreat of awanmulan was completed in many stages since the acquisition of the eastern hill side land in late 2009. The first house that was built was Teratak Bonda (which is malay for Mother's hut). The other family rooms Kesidang and Sunrise followed a year after. The western hillside land across the road was acquired soon thereafter where the Sasterawan and Evensong houses were built and some time in 2013 began the construction of the Durian Runtuh house which was completed at the end of 2014. The Senjja container house was then envisioned and completed in early 2016. All rooms were built to bring about a sense of being at a home away from home and as such are fully equipped with all cooking equipment and dining utensils. Self catering is encouraged and coal barbecues very popular amongst visitors. The eastern wing of the retreat was subsequently sold to a private owner in early 2018 but we continue to receive guests on the western wing
The name Awanmulan was inspired by our dearly departed friend and canine companion Mulan who sadly departed us for the land of the rainbow bridge and is buried on the land. She was very close to the family but sadly passed away during construction. Awanmulan means Mulan's Clouds which is in reference to the misty fog that envelops the house on rainy days which we have declared belongs to Mulan for all time.
Our Sky Pool (facing sunset) is the most popular focal points of activity. Swim in the cool lightly salted water and stare at the serenity of the hills, or the expansiveness of skies and let your worries dissolve and wither away as the sun sets over the western horizon. Also enjoy the company of our loving resident dogs Gina and Daniel whom you will find wandering around the pool area, coming to say hello. You may also find Mr Teng enjoying a beer while watching the sunset or going for a swim in the evenings, and Mrs Teng wearing her straw hat and tending to her lovely garden.
Rooms and Spaces
Kick back and watch the sun go to sleep.
Our most popular little hut built to inspire a writter. Sasterawan means writter in Malay
Our newest and last house. Means evening in Malay, although spelled slightly different as creative license.
Named because it catches falling Durians during fruiting season. Also is a malay metaphor for windfall or prosperity.
Right beneath our new house Durian Runtuh is the family sized room of Rahsiah. Kept secret from the world and tucked away where no one can see.
Facing the western hillside with a grand vista of a valley and sunset.
